  1. 1852-1912. Emperor of Japan from 1867, when
  2. he took the title meiji tenno (`enlightened
  3. sovereign'). During his reign Japan became a
  4. world industrial and naval power. He
  5. abolished the feudal system and
  6. discrimination against the lowest caste,
  7. established state schools, and introduced
  8. conscription, the Western calendar, and other
  9. measures in an attempt to modernize Japan,
  10. including a constitution 1889. The son of
  11. Emperor Komei, he took the personal name
  12. Mutsuhito when he became crown prince 1860.
